Trademark Renewal Guide in Lebanon

Trademark renewal involves obtaining accurate details of the trademark, submitting a copy of the active trademark certificate or a copy of the trademark publication, and completing documents accurately. It is worth noting that in Lebanon when a trademark is renewed, all details of the trademark are re-submitted, and the trademark goes through an additional thorough examination. The trademark office then examines the application submitted, issues the official receipt, then the renewal fees would be due for settlement. After the renewal fees are settled, a certificate of renewal is issued in hard copy. The certificate will not be effective unless it has official stamps, and unless it is rubber stamped and signed by an authorized representative at the trademark office.

The renewal process in Lebanon takes up to 1 month to issue the renewal certificate and to be completed. If all the required documents are available. 

If you forget to renew your trademark before the expiry date, you have a chance to renew it within a grace period. The grace period for renewal in Lebanon is three months from the expiry date and penalty charges are around USD50 for each month of delay. If the trademark in Lebanon is renewed within the grace period, then the owner will have to settle penalty fees.

In Lebanon, the protection of a trademark starts from the date of registration and lasts for ten years from the registration date. Trademark protection can be renewed for successive periods of ten years by filing a renewal application with the Trademark Office within the last 3 months of the protection period.

The required documents for renewing a trademark in Lebanon are:

Power Of Attorney

• If you are a local company or a resident of Lebanon, the power of attorney can be signed and notarized.

• If you are not a resident of Lebanon, then the power of attorney needs to be legalized at the Lebanese embassy.

Copy of the trademark certificate or copy of the publication.

• For the renewal we need a copy of the valid trademark certificate or a copy of the trademark publication

Copy of the Commercial certificate or trade license

• If you are a local company in Lebanon, a simple copy of your trade license.

Copy of the ID or passport

• If you are a local individual, we need copy of your national ID. If you are a foreigner, we will require a copy of the passport.

Trademark renewals can be filed 3 months after the expiry date in a period called the grace period. So, if you forget to renew your mark before the expiration date, then you have a three-month grace period to renew the trademark. Renewing a trademark in the grace period yields penalty charges. And in this case, you can re-register it. Failing to renew a trademark in Lebanon will entitle anyone interested in the mark to cancel it from the register and protect it in their name.
