In Lebanon, the main law governing trademarks is Law No. 67 of 1999 on the Protection of Intellectual Property Rights, which came into effect on January 13, 2000. This law provides for the registration, protection, and enforcement of trademarks in Lebanon.
A smooth trademark registration generally passes through three phases:
Filing – you file the trademark at the TM department.
Publication – if the mark is accepted and not rejected, it will be published for 90 days. No one can oppose the said publication. You may file a cancellation action against the infringed mark within 5 years from the date of registration of the trademark.
Registration – after the opposition/publication period ends, you can pay the final registration fees and receive your trademark certificate.

It takes about two weeks to complete the registration process for a trademark, and the corresponding registration certificate is issued within two weeks of the date of registration under the usual circumstances.
The examination criteria are both on absolute grounds and relative grounds:
Absolute grounds for trademark refusals in Lebanon are:
Relative grounds for trademark refusals - assess whether a trademark application filed in Lebanon may confuse due to the similarity with a previously registered or famous trademark locally.

A trademark is valid for 15 years from the filing date.

Trademark registration is valid for 10 years calculated from the filing date. To maintain protection after 10 years, a brand owner should renew the trademark by filing a renewal application.
A trademark owner who is usually referred to as an applicant has to file a trademark on each class required since Lebanon is a multi-class system. You can register your trademark on a number of classes. An applicant can protect a trademark on all 45 classes. Every trademark is registered on a specific list of goods (products or services). In Lebanon, there is no limitation on the number of classes you can register your trademark on.
